Trend Micro predicted that ransomware groups will increasingly target Linux servers and embedded systems over the coming years. It recorded a double-digit year-on-year (YoY) increase in attacks on these systems in 1H 2022.

Ransomware attacks on Linux servers are increasing, IT administrators have been warned. The alert comes in the midyear threat analysis roundup from researchers at Trend Micro. A new ransomware variant dubbed Cheerscrypt has been detected that targets VMware ESXi servers. That’s helped the 75 per cent increase in attacks on Linux systems in the first half of the year.

A new ransomware strain is being distributed that pretends to be a Google software update. Researchers at Trend Micro call this strain HavanaCrypt. Before executing the ransomware it deletes Windows shadow copies of data and system restore instances. Listeners must ignore any email or text message that claims to be a Google update. Remember applications like Gmail, Workspace, Google Docs and others automatically update. The only safe way to get a browser update is to have your Chrome browser set to automatically download updates, or you can just go into the control menu. You get that from clicking on the three dots in the upper right corner of the browser. From there click on Help and then About Google Chrome.
Despite investing money into cybersecurity, many Canadian organizations — and their global peers — admit they still have visibility problems into their IT systems, which complicates their ability to secure vital data. According to a recently-released global study for Trend Micro of 6,297 IT and business decision-makers across 29 countries, nearly two-thirds (62 per cent) of all respondents — including 60 per cent of Canadian participants — acknowledged having blind spots in trying to secure their attack surface.
