    Global cybersecurity provider Trend Micro has announced the launch of its latest global Cyber Risk Index (CRI) for the second half of 2022. According to the results, the overall global cyber-risk levels have improved from “elevated” to “moderate” for the first time. While North America and Canada still stand at an elevated risk level, Canada received a score of -0.03, which shows an improvement compared to the first half of the year (-0.30). Although Canada has steadily shown improvement year after year, there is still work to be done. According to Jon Clay, VP of threat intelligence at Trend Micro, "Canadian organizations must continue to take steps to improve their cyber-preparedness so they can stay ahead of the ever-evolving threats, especially since most anticipate a breach within the next year."

    Security researchers picked up US$989,750 in prizes for demonstrating 63 unique zero day vulnerabilities in consumer and small office products during the four-day Toronto edition of the Pwn2Own hacking contest. The biggest bundle of cash went to a team from Devcore Security Consulting of Taiwan, which won US$142,500. As a result it was named the event’s Master of Pwn. It was the first time the contest, run under Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative, was held in Toronto. Teams or individuals competed either live at Trend Micro’s Toronto office or online.

In this edition of the event, sponsored by Trend Micro, participants demonstrated 63 unique zero-day exploits by breaking into home and small office routers and printers. The biggest bundle of cash went to a team from Devcore Security Consulting of Taiwan, which won US$142,500. As a result it was named the event’s Master of Pwn. The total amount awarded to all participants was $989,750. The biggest payout of the series was at the 2021 event in Vancouver, where participants won US$1.2 million. The next competition will be in Miami in February.

But the new world of ransomware and cyber attacks is a new and dangerous space where Canada is increasingly vulnerable and under attack. According to Trend Micro’s 2022 Mid-Year report, two thirds of Canadian companies are “not optimistic” about defending against ransomware in the coming year. According to the report, Canadian companies are being hit badly by the “steal and reveal” attacks; 66 percent have experienced data theft (exfiltration) and extortion. However, a surprisingly high number of Canadian companies have ransomware insurance and were able to file a claim as a result of an attack.

    A new ransomware strain is being distributed that pretends to be a Google software update. Researchers at Trend Micro call this strain HavanaCrypt. Before executing the ransomware it deletes Windows shadow copies of data and system restore instances. Listeners must ignore any email or text message that claims to be a Google update. Remember applications like Gmail, Workspace, Google Docs and others automatically update. The only safe way to get a browser update is to have your Chrome browser set to automatically download updates, or you can just go into the control menu. You get that from clicking on the three dots in the upper right corner of the browser. From there click on Help and then About Google Chrome.

The latest reason why comes from a report by security researchers at Trend Micro into the workings of a new strain of the AvosLocker ransomware.
