Trend Micro Inc. blocked over 33.6 million cloud email threats in 2021, a 101% increase on the previous year. This stark increase in attacks proves that email remains a top point of entry for cyber attacks.

In 2021, manufacturing overtook financial services as the most attacked sector in terms of cybersecurity, accounting for almost a quarter (23%) of ransomware attacks globally. Trend Micro found that as many as 69% of global manufacturers run outdated operating systems.

Hacking is a business now. They did it by finding ways to evade defences in commercial software such as Windows, Ubuntu and several browsers. Winners included a team that was able to get into the infotainment system used in a Tesla Model 3 car. The contest, sponsored by Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative, is run at a number of cyber conferences around the world to help find vulnerabilities before crooks do.
